Kodiak’s Journey: A Puppy’s Road to Healing From Chemical Burns

When a volunteer from I.C.A.R.E. Dog Rescue walked through a local shelter recently, she didn’t expect to meet a puppy like Kodiak. Just six months old, he had clearly been through far too much for such a young life. His body was marked with intentional burns, his paw was badly injured, and while the shelter staff had done their best, he needed more specialized care than they could provide. I.C.A.R.E. knew they couldn’t leave him behind.
This is what I.C.A.R.E. (Into Canine Adoption, Rehabilitation, and Education) does best. Based in Southern California, the all-volunteer 501(c)(3) rescue is dedicated to saving dogs at risk of euthanasia, as well as those abandoned or surrendered. Each dog goes straight into a foster home where they receive medical attention, training, and love until they’re ready for a forever family. I.C.A.R.E. specializes in helping dogs who need extra support to heal both physically and emotionally, giving them the safe space to rediscover what it means to be loved.
Kodiak’s foster mom first shared his story on in August, noting that this five-month-old Pitbull mix had come into the Riverside Shelter as a stray on with burn marks on his head, down his back, and a badly injured leg. He was chemical burned and needed treatment twice a week on his foot, but through it all, his gentle nature shines. With his foster mom, he visits the vet regularly for bandage changes, and each time the staff remark on how patient and loving he is.
Kodiak loves other dogs, is friendly with cats, gentle with children, and is already housetrained and great on a leash. His resilience is a reminder of what’s possible when compassion meets opportunity.
From October 6–8, 2025, Pet Releaf is proud to support I.C.A.R.E. with a Buy One, Give One event. For every Pet Releaf product purchased during that time, a product will be sent directly to I.C.A.R.E. to help dogs like Kodiak. It’s a simple way to show your love for your own pet while also giving rescue dogs the care and comfort they need as they wait for forever homes.
Together, we can help ensure dogs like Kodiak get the happy endings they deserve.
You can also support Kodiak directly by donating to his medical care fund. To follow along with his journey, check out his foster’s updates on Instagram at @my_rescue_adventures and follow @icaredogrescue for more on the lifesaving work they do.
