From Paralysis to Second Chances: Noelle's Rescue Story

Rescue Tales is a content series that celebrates the inspiring rescue stories of pets within the Pet Releaf community. Each story reveals their journey to finding a forever home, highlighting the impact of second chances, fresh starts, and the care they receive to help them live their best lives.

Noelle, a dog previously known as Wilhelmina, is a 3-year-old rescue dog, who –thanks to the help of South Florida Mutt Rescue and her new foster parents, Gabi and Laura – has found a happy ending.

A Heartbreaking Beginning

In late 2024, a community member reached out to animal control, reporting that a dog, tethered in the backyard of a home, appeared unable to move her back legs. After the authorities arrived, the owner explained that the dog had been hit by a car two years prior. Unable to afford the necessary medical care, the owner had done what they could: providing aspirin and bone broth, cleaning the dog’s wounds, and allowing her to scoot around the yard. But despite their efforts, Wilhelmina’s condition only worsened. With no access to proper veterinary care, she was left in a state of physical and emotional suffering, tethered and isolated.

The dog's physical condition was alarming. She was emaciated, her back legs were paralyzed, and she had pressure sores on her pelvis from prolonged immobility. Despite these challenges, the rescue team quickly discovered what made Wilhelmina stand out: her spirit. She was gentle, sweet, and calm—yet clearly eager to live. This was a dog who had endured unimaginable hardship, yet still had the will to fight for a better life.

A Second Chance

When the shelter received an email informing them of Wilhelmina’s impending euthanasia deadline, it was clear something needed to be done—immediately. Enter South Florida Mutt Rescue, who stepped in to offer Wilhelmina the chance she so desperately needed. As soon as they got the email, Gabi, one of the dedicated fosters, knew she couldn’t let this sweet soul slip through the cracks. Gabi and Laura were committed to giving Noelle—formerly Wilhelmina—a second chance at life.

Starting to Heal

After coming into Gabi and Laura’s care, Noelle’s physical and emotional healing began. While she still faces the challenges of her paralysis, she’s now receiving the veterinary care she so desperately needed. One of the first steps in her recovery was the introduction of Stress Releaf, a Pet Releaf product that Gabi has used with her own dogs for years. The supplement helps Noelle settle in, reducing stress and supporting her overall well-being as she adjusts to her new environment.

Noelle’s medical needs are extensive. She continues to receive treatment for her pressure sores, and her paralysis means that special care is required to ensure she remains comfortable and healthy. Fortunately, Noelle is heartworm-negative and has been vaccinated, which is a relief for her long-term prospects. Despite the physical challenges, Noelle has shown remarkable resilience and a sweet, calm nature that makes her a joy to be around.

The Journey Ahead

Noelle’s journey is far from over. Her transition to foster care has allowed her to show her true nature—affectionate, sweet, and always hopeful. Gabi, her foster mom, has been impressed by Noelle’s ability to bond with people and her gentle spirit. Noelle may never walk again, but that doesn’t stop her from living a full life.

South Florida Mutt Rescue is still looking for a forever home that can understand her medical needs and is willing to provide the care and love she deserves. Noelle may require ongoing care, but her spirit is undeniable. She’s a dog with an incredible will to live and an even greater capacity to love.
